Mud Lake Farm, LLC

Q.  Is your lettuce Organic?

A.  No.  We use a hydroponic nutrient mix that is designed for
lettuce.  It has all the macro and micro nutrients in the correct
ratios for good growth and health of the plant.  It is not organic,
but hydroponics doesn't really lend itself to organic, since in
organic farming you are adding natural things to the soil so that
the microbes in the soil can break them down into minerals that
the plant can use.  In hydroponics there isn't any soil, thus no soil
microbes to break down organic nutrients.

Q.  Do you use organically approved pesticides?

A.  No.  We don't use any pesticides - plant derived or synthetic.
We use only beneficial insects for pest control.  Ladybugs are our
main defense and offense, along with lacewing larvae.  This
means you may have to wash off a bug or two, but we feel this
natural pest control is much safer than putting poisons on our
plants and in our bodies.

Q.  I'm a member of another CSA also.  Can I join
your CSA for the fall/winter/spring only?

A.  Yes.  Our CSA is a monthly commitment.  You may choose
how long you want to participate.  However, our CSA shares are
available on a first-come first-served basis.  If demand increases
there is a possibility that there won't be shares available in the
fall.  Another option is to reduce your share to a half-share for the
summer.

Q.  Can I choose what types of lettuce I receive?

A.  No.  Your share will be a mix of at least 3 different lettuces,
and the mix will change depending on what varieties are
available for harvest that week.

Q.  How much lettuce is a pound?

A.  Our lettuce averages about 1/4 pound per head.  A pound of
lettuce will usually be 3-5 heads.

Q.  Is there a deadline for joining the CSA?

A.  No.  We are a year-round CSA, and members are invoiced
monthly, so you can join at any time, as long as we have shares
available.

Q.  Can I stop by and pick up some lettuce?

A.  If you'd like to try our lettuce, please check with our specialty
store customers first.  We do not have a "farm store", or "hours of
operation".  Our lettuce is picked to order.

Q.  Can I stop by for a tour?

A.  We'd love to show you our farm, however, please remember
that this is a family farm.  The farm is our business, and we are
usually busy picking, packing, or delivering lettuce and herbs to
our customers.  Please call ahead to schedule a time for a tour.
Generally, we can schedule tours on Monday mornings, but
please call us to schedule one rather than just "stopping by".
